Amniotic Membranes
Amniotic membrane therapy involves using a biological tissue that contains anti-inflammatory factors crucial for tissue healing and regeneration. This treatment is particularly beneficial for patients with severe dry eye or other ocular surface disorders.
-
The amniotic membrane is obtained from the placenta. It is then processed, sterilized, and FDA-approved for clinical use.
-
Promotes healing: The membrane provides a scaffold for epithelial cells to grow, facilitating the repair of damaged ocular surfaces.
Reduces inflammation: It has anti-inflammatory properties that can soothe the ocular surface, helping to alleviate symptoms of irritation and discomfort associated with dry eye.
Barrier Function: By acting as a protective barrier, the amniotic membrane helps to shield the cornea from further irritation and contributes to maintaining a stable tear film.
-
A drop of anesthetic drop is applied to numb the eye and minimize discomfort .
A speculum is used to keep the eyelid open (it looks scarier than it is!)
A small, sterile piece of amniotic membrane is applied directed onto the eye
The amniotic membrane is secured in place using a soft contact lens.
-
Typically between 5-7 days. The contact lens will be removed at that time.
-
You'll be prescribed antibiotic eye drops to use for the duration of the amniotic membrane treatment.
